What is AI SEO? What's proven and what isn't

AI SEO means getting cited in AI answers, or using AI to do SEO. What Google says, what the research shows, and what a UAE business should do first.

The short answer

AI SEO means one of two things: getting your business cited in AI answers from Google, ChatGPT and similar tools, or using AI to do SEO work faster. For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, so most of the first job is ordinary SEO with specific, sourced pages.

The most useful thing to know about AI SEO is that Google says there's nothing special to do for its own AI answers. To appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, according to Google's documentation, which also says no special schema is required. That doesn't make the subject empty, but it does mean any pitch for Google's AI answers has to name something beyond ordinary SEO, and the first job is to find out whether it does.

What do people mean by AI SEO?

AI SEO is two different jobs sharing one name, and most business owners who ask about it mean the first. One job is getting your business named or cited in answers written by AI tools. The other is using AI tools to do SEO work faster.

An agency that says it does AI SEO could mean either, so ask which. "We use AI in our workflows" is a statement about its costs. "We'll get you cited" is a statement about your results, and nobody outside the engines can promise it. The post on choosing an AI SEO agency lists the questions, and AEO, GEO and SEO separates the labels.

Google says its AI answers need no special optimisation

Google's documentation lists no extra requirements: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and nothing more. The same documentation says no special schema is needed, and Google's guide to generative AI features says new AI text files such as llms.txt are unnecessary and that content doesn't have to be broken into tiny pieces to be quoted.

Both AI Overviews and AI Mode are available in the UAE, and Google lists Arabic among the supported languages. Availability doesn't mean every search shows an AI answer, so how often your customers see one depends on what they ask. The post on AI Overviews and AI Mode explains how the two differ.

All of that describes Google's documentation as viewed on 7 November 2026. It doesn't cover ChatGPT, Perplexity or other assistants, so treat any confident account of how they choose sources as a claim to check against what each company has published.

What does the research say works?

The main academic test is the GEO paper, accepted to KDD 2024, by researchers including Princeton University. It reported that content changes can raise a source's visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, on a benchmark of 10,000 queries. The post on what GEO is covers the background.

Adding citations, quotations and statistics gave relative improvements of 30 to 40% on a position-adjusted measure of how much a source is cited and how prominent it is. Keyword stuffing didn't perform well, and lower-ranked sites gained more than higher-ranked ones.

Read the limits before repeating that figure. The paper measures visibility inside generated answers, not traffic, leads or revenue. It's a benchmark from 2023 and 2024 rather than a test on today's engines, and a separate test on Perplexity gave smaller gains.

The practical reading is modest and useful. A page that states a price, names its sources and carries a quotation gives an answer engine something to lift that a page of adjectives doesn't, and adding those facts to an existing page is a small edit. The post on writing FAQs that AI assistants quote shows the format.

Five AI SEO claims with no proof behind them

Five claims you may hear in a pitch have no evidence behind them that would justify a retainer.

  • "An llms.txt file will get you cited." The file is a proposal published by Jeremy Howard on 3 September 2024. Google says Search doesn't use such files, and none of the sources checked for this guide shows OpenAI confirming that it reads one. Keeping one for other tools won't change your Google visibility either way, and the llms.txt guide covers the format.
  • "Special schema gets you into AI answers." Google's AI features documentation says no special schema is needed. Markup still helps search engines read a page, and the post on schema for AI search separates what helps from what's hype.
  • "FAQ markup earns rich results." Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, so an ordinary business shouldn't buy markup for that purpose. Answering real questions in plain text is still good content.
  • "You can raise your E-E-A-T score." Google says E-E-A-T itself isn't a specific ranking factor, so there's no score to raise. It does call trust the most important of its aspects, which is a reason to show who wrote a page and where its facts came from.
  • "We guarantee a mention in ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews." Nobody outside the engine controls what it says, and Google's own documentation promises only eligibility. The post on getting mentioned in ChatGPT covers what you can influence.

Does AI search matter to UAE businesses yet?

Adoption is high in the UAE, while the click data comes from the United States. Microsoft's AI Diffusion report for the second quarter of 2026 put the UAE top of its leaderboard, with 73.3% of people aged 15 to 64 having used a generative AI product, against 18.8% worldwide. That measures having tried one, not daily use and not use at work.

OpenAI says ChatGPT has about 1.2 billion weekly users worldwide. That's the company's own unaudited figure, and no UAE number accompanies it.

The evidence on what searchers do next is American. A Pew Research study found US adults clicked a traditional result in 8% of Google visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one, using March 2025 browsing data from 900 adults, and Google has disputed the method. SparkToro's 2026 analysis, reported by Search Engine Journal, found 68% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, though it used a different panel from SparkToro's 2024 study and the two aren't like for like.

Treat both as American evidence that fewer searches end in a click, not as a UAE forecast. Your own Search Console clicks and your own enquiries are the only UAE numbers that exist for your business, and the posts on AI Overviews and traffic and on measuring AI visibility show how to read them.

What should a UAE business do first?

Six moves, in this order, because each one makes the next worth doing.

  1. 01Check that your important pages are indexed and can show a snippet. Google Search Console shows which pages Google has indexed, and a page that isn't indexed can't appear in its AI answers.
  2. 02Start with pages that already earn impressions. Improving a page Google already shows is cheaper than persuading it to show a new one.
  3. 03Add specifics to those pages: prices or the logic behind them, numbers, named sources and dates. The GEO paper's best results came from citations, quotations and statistics, and adding facts to a page that exists is a small edit.
  4. 04Make your business facts identical everywhere they appear: name, address, services, prices and opening hours, in English and Arabic. That isn't proven to change citations, but a wrong answer about your business is worse than no answer, and consistency costs only time. The post on entity SEO explains why it matters.
  5. 05Write Arabic pages as originals, not translations. Google lists Arabic among the supported languages for both AI features, so an Arabic query can surface an AI answer too, and AI search in Arabic covers what changes.
  6. 06Test what the assistants say about you, then repeat monthly. Ask the five questions your best customers ask before buying, once in English and once in Arabic, on each assistant they use. Write down who's named, what's said and what's wrong, and ask each question twice because wording changes between runs.

The AI search optimisation checklist expands these moves, and how to appear in Google AI Overviews covers Google's side in more detail.

Using AI to do SEO work is fine inside one limit

Google's guidance rewards high-quality content however it's produced, and the same guidance says using AI mainly to manipulate search rankings violates its spam policies. Both halves matter, because quoting only the first makes Google sound relaxed about AI content.

Google's line is purpose and value, not the tool. Its spam policies define scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help users, and name generative AI pages with no added value as an example. Google's guide to generative AI features says the same policy covers attempts to manipulate AI answers in Search.

A workable rule is that AI drafts, and a person adds the facts, checks every claim and decides whether the page should exist at all. Magnetic Keys uses AI in its own workflows and says so, and the post on an AI content workflow without slop describes a five-stage pipeline in which an editor can veto anything.

One test catches most of the trouble: would the page exist if search engines didn't? If the answer is no, don't publish it. The post on whether Google penalises AI content goes through the policy wording.

Most UAE businesses shouldn't buy AI SEO as a separate line yet

Ordinary SEO done well comes first, because Google puts the entry ticket for its AI answers there, and an agency selling AI SEO on top should be able to name the extra work.

Extra work worth paying for does exist: measuring what assistants say in English and Arabic, correcting wrong facts about your business across the web, and rewriting key pages with sourced specifics. If a quote can't list its extra hours in terms like those, it's the SEO retainer you already have with a higher price on it.

If you'd like a second opinion on a quote, the free cost review is a short call and a written answer within 72 hours.

One question works on every AI SEO quote: what will change on my site in month one, and which assistant answer should that change by month six? A vague reply tells you what the extra fee buys.

Questions people ask

01Will AI replace SEO?

No. The pages that AI answers draw on still have to be found, indexed and worth quoting, and Google says its AI features need nothing beyond indexing and snippet eligibility. What may change is how many searches end in a click, which US studies suggest and for which no UAE equivalent was found.

02Do I need an llms.txt file?

Not for Google. Google says Search doesn't use llms.txt and that you don't need new AI text files to appear in its AI features. The file is a proposal from September 2024 rather than an adopted standard, and no confirmation that OpenAI reads it was found. Publish one if you like, but it shouldn't be sold to you as an SEO service.

03Is it OK to use AI to write SEO content?

Yes, with a limit. Google rewards high-quality content however it is produced, but says using AI mainly to manipulate rankings violates its spam policies. Mass-producing pages that add nothing is the risk. Draft with AI if you like, then have a person add facts, check claims and decide whether each page deserves to exist.

04How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Nobody can guarantee a mention. The one academic test found that adding citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in generated answers, so put specific facts and named sources on your key pages and keep your business details consistent in English and Arabic. Then ask each assistant the questions your customers ask, and record what it says about you every month.

05Is AI SEO worth paying for in the UAE?

Pay for ordinary SEO first, because Google says its AI answers need no special optimisation. A separate AI SEO fee earns its place once the agency can name the extra work, such as measuring assistant answers in two languages and correcting wrong facts, and can show you a before and after.
