How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Google says AI Overviews need nothing beyond a page that's indexed and eligible for a snippet. That makes this a diagnosis job. Seven steps, in order.

The short answer

Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. So check those two things first, then make the page worth quoting: answer the question in the first sentence, add facts only you have, and keep key details in plain text. No special markup or llms.txt file is needed.

Google's documentation is unusually blunt here. Nothing extra is required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond a page that's in Google's index and allowed to show with a snippet. That turns the question into a diagnosis. Is each page you care about indexed, is anything telling Google not to show a snippet, and if both are fine, is the page worth quoting?

Availability is a separate matter. Google's Search Help page lists the UAE among the places where AI Overviews are available and lists Arabic among the supported languages (viewed 7 November 2026). That doesn't mean every search shows one, so the first job is to find out which of your questions do.

What do you check, and in what order?

  1. 01List the questions your buyers ask. Fifteen to twenty will do. Copy them word for word from your last month of WhatsApp enquiries and sales calls, in English and in Arabic where that applies.
  2. 02Search each one on Google, ideally on a phone with a UAE connection, and write down whether an AI Overview appeared and which pages it linked. Date the log. Many questions won't show an overview, and that's normal.
  3. 03Check that your page is indexed. In Google Search Console, paste the page address into the URL inspection box. If the page isn't on Google, look for a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical tag pointing elsewhere, or a page so close to another that Google skipped it.
  4. 04Check that nothing blocks snippets. Developers and SEO plugins sometimes add nosnippet or a zero max-snippet value to a page's robots tags, which keeps your text out of snippets. Search the page source for both terms and remove them unless there's a reason you can state.
  5. 05Open the pages the overviews link to and put them beside yours. Don't count words. Look for what they contain that yours doesn't: a price, a timeline, a table, a named source, a local detail. Add whatever is true of your business and missing from your page.
  6. 06Rewrite the top of the page so the first sentence under each heading answers the heading, and put the facts in text rather than in images, sliders or PDFs. Google's guide says content doesn't need to be chopped into tiny pieces, so write for a reader who wants the answer and then the reasoning. Give the Arabic version the same treatment, written in Arabic and not translated.
  7. 07Repeat the log monthly. Give it the timescale SEO needs: we publish ours as movement for most sites in 3 to 4 months, and 6 to 12 for competitive terms. Note which of your pages get linked, and go back to step 3 for any important page that never does.

What if a step fails?

Symptoms, likely causes and fixes
What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
Search Console says the page isn't on GoogleA noindex tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical pointing elsewhere, or a near-duplicateFix the tag or block, request indexing, and make the page distinct enough to deserve its own entry
The page is indexed but never linked in an overviewOther pages answer the question more directly or with more specificsCompare the linked pages and add what is true of you and missing from your page
Competitors are linked and your page looks just as strongAn ordinary SEO gap, such as fewer trusted mentions or linksWork through why a UAE site isn't ranking, in order
An overview says something wrong about your businessAn old or contradictory source on your site or elsewhereTrace the claim to its source, correct it there, and keep a dated record
No overview appears for any of your questionsNot every search shows oneKeep the page good for ordinary results and re-run the log next month

Do schema markup and llms.txt help?

Not for Google. Its documentation says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and its guide to generative AI features says you don't need llms.txt or other new AI text files. Structured data still has ordinary uses, but it isn't a switch for overviews.

FAQ markup deserves its own warning. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, so don't pay anyone to add it in the hope that a business site will earn the display.

What should you leave alone?

  • Mass-produced pages. Google's spam policies call it scaled content abuse when many pages are generated mainly to manipulate rankings, and they name generative AI pages with no added value as an example. Read the glossary entry before commissioning a hundred question pages.
  • Rewriting good pages into fragments. Google says content doesn't have to be broken into tiny pieces, and a page that reads badly to a person still has to convert that person.
  • Anyone selling guaranteed placement. The only conditions Google names are indexing and snippet eligibility, so a guarantee would be a promise about choices that belong to Google.

No UAE figures for what overviews do to clicks could be found, and the US research is disputed, so measure your own impressions, clicks and enquiries. The post on AI Overviews and traffic covers the evidence that does exist, and AI Overviews versus AI Mode explains what changes between the two.

If you do one thing today, take the ten pages that matter most to your revenue and check two facts on each: that Google has indexed the page, and that nothing forbids a snippet. Google says nothing else is required. Everything after that is making the page worth quoting, which a good SEO team does anyway.

Questions people ask

01Can you optimise for Google AI Overviews?

Yes, but there's no separate checklist. Google names only two conditions: the page is indexed, and it may show a snippet. The work is making each page the clearest, most specific answer to a real question: a direct first sentence, facts only you have, key details in plain text and consistent business details.

02Do I need schema markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still has its normal uses, such as helping Google understand a page, but it isn't an overviews switch. FAQ rich results are limited to well-known government and health sites.

03Are AI Overviews available in Arabic in the UAE?

Google's Search Help page lists the UAE among the places where AI Overviews are available and lists Arabic among the supported languages, as viewed on 7 November 2026. That's availability, not a promise that every Arabic search shows one, so test your own questions in Arabic.

04How long does it take to appear in an AI Overview?

Google gives no timescale. A page has to be indexed and snippet-eligible like any search result, so ordinary SEO timing is the sensible guide. Ours is 3 to 4 months before most sites see movement, and 6 to 12 for competitive terms.

05Why does my competitor appear in AI Overviews and I don't?

Usually because their page answers the question more directly or with more specific facts, or because theirs is indexed and yours isn't. Open the pages an overview links to, compare them with yours, and look for a price, timeline, table or local detail that yours lacks before blaming markup.
