Why your UAE website isn't ranking: a diagnosis in order
Eight tests, in order, to find out why a UAE website isn't ranking on Google: indexing, intent, content, technology, authority, competition and time.
The short answer
Diagnose a page that isn't ranking in order, and stop at the first failure: is it indexed, are you measuring the right thing, does it match the search intent, does it say more than the top results, does the technology get in the way, do other sites vouch for it, can you win the query, and has enough time passed.
Check whether the page is in Google's index before anything else, because every other test is meaningless if it isn't. Paste the address into the URL Inspection tool in Search Console. If it says the URL isn't on Google, stop here and fix that. Only when it says the URL is on Google does the rest of this diagnosis apply.
The tests below run in the order that wastes least time, cheapest and most fundamental first. Stop at the first one a page fails, because fixing a later problem on a page that fails an earlier test changes nothing.
What are the eight tests?
- Is the page indexed? Test: URL Inspection in Search Console. A fail is a message that the URL isn't on Google. Common causes are a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical pointing at another page, a redirect, or a page too new for Google to have visited, and the classic is staging settings left switched on after a launch. Fix the cause, then request indexing once. If the status is "Crawled, currently not indexed", Google saw the page and chose to skip it, so treat that as a content problem and jump to test 4.
- Are you measuring the right thing? Test: in the Performance report, filter to the United Arab Emirates and look at the page's queries and average position. A fail is judging by one phrase on one phone in one place. Results vary with location, language and device, and a rank checker based in another country can show a picture nobody in the UAE sees. Also search your own business name in English and in Arabic spelling: if you don't appear, that's a test 1 or test 5 problem or a naming one, not a competition one.
- Is it the right kind of page for the search? Test: search the query yourself and list the page types in the first ten results, such as category pages, service pages, guides, comparisons, directories and maps. A fail is a guide where Google shows category pages, or an English page where the results are in Arabic. No amount of polish turns one page type into another, so build the type the results reward or pick a query your page type can win.
- Does it say more than the pages above it? Test: read the first three results and list what they contain that yours doesn't, such as prices, steps, evidence, local detail and answers to follow-up questions. A fail is a page that's shorter and vaguer, repeats a supplier's description, or sits among several near-identical pages that differ only by emirate. Add what only you know. Thin content doesn't have to reach spam to fail this test.
- Does the technology get in the way? Test: view the page source and check your text is there, then run the page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. A fail is text that appears only after JavaScript runs, a mobile page that hides what the desktop page shows, a canonical pointing elsewhere, hreflang pairs that don't return to each other, or failing field data. Have a developer put the content in the HTML and work through Core Web Vitals for UAE sites.
- Do other sites vouch for it? Test: use a backlink tool to count and compare the sites linking to the top three results and to your page. For a local business, compare your Google Business Profile reviews with the businesses in the map results. A fail is a clear gap in relevant mentions. Earn links the way link building in the UAE describes, and don't buy packages.
- Can you win this query at all? Test: look at who holds the first five positions. A fail is marketplaces, government portals, large publishers or directories filling them, with nothing about your business that's bigger or more useful. Narrow the query to something specific you do better, or pay for the click with Google Ads while the page earns its place. SEO or Google Ads first in the UAE helps you choose.
- Has it been long enough? Test: compare the date the page was published, or last substantially rewritten, with our published SEO timing, which is that most sites see movement in 3 to 4 months, with competitive terms taking 6 to 12. A fail is a page younger than that when everything above passed. Nothing is wrong with the page: you're waiting out a clock, so work on other pages meanwhile.
Which tests apply to the whole site?
Run tests 1 and 5 once per template and the rest per page. Template problems repeat: if one product page fails test 5, every product page built on that template fails with it, and the fix is one change to the template. A technical SEO checklist for UAE websites lists the template-level checks in full.
Pages that pass tests 1 to 5 but still sit on page three are telling you the problem lies outside the page. Authority and competition decide what happens next, and neither is fixed by editing the page.
What if the first six tests pass and the page still isn't ranking?
Then the cause is most likely competition or time, tests 7 and 8, and the useful decision is whether to wait, narrow the query or buy clicks in the meantime. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking as link spam, so buying authority isn't one of the options.
If you'd rather have someone else run all eight, a written audit is the product to ask for. Our Growth Audit Sprint is AED 18,000 before VAT and includes a technical and content SEO audit alongside the wider funnel review, and the SEO audit entry in the glossary says what a good one covers.
Test 1 on your five most important pages takes a few minutes. If one of them says the URL isn't on Google, you've found the reason without spending anything. For Search Console basics, see Google Search Console for business owners.
Questions people ask
Why is my website not showing on Google?
First check whether it's indexed by pasting the address into Search Console's URL Inspection tool. If the URL isn't on Google, look for a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical pointing elsewhere, or a page too new to have been visited. If it's indexed, the problem is relevance, content, authority or competition.
How long does it take for a new website to rank on Google?
On our published timing, most sites see movement in 3 to 4 months and competitive terms take 6 to 12. A page can be indexed within days or weeks, but being indexed isn't the same as ranking for anything competitive.
Why does my website rank for my company name but nothing else?
Brand searches are the easiest to win because the query names you. Ranking for anything else needs pages that match what buyers search, say more than the pages already ranking, and have other sites vouching for you. Work through the intent, content and authority checks for the queries you want.
Can I fix my rankings by buying backlinks?
Not safely. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes as link spam, and links can't fix a page that isn't indexed or doesn't match the search. Diagnose in order first, and earn links from real businesses after the earlier checks pass.
Why does my website rank differently on different phones?
Google tailors results by location, language, device and search history, so two people in the UAE can see different results. Use Search Console's average position for the United Arab Emirates, filtered to the query, rather than one phone's screenshot or a rank checker in another country.
