Google Search Console for business owners: the five reports that matter
A 20-minute monthly routine for five Search Console reports: what to look at, what to do with it, and what to ignore. Written for UAE business owners.
The short answer
Open five Search Console reports once a month: Performance for queries and pages, Pages for what Google hasn't indexed, Sitemaps to confirm it can read your URLs, Links to see who links to you and what you link to, and Manual actions for penalties. Twenty minutes is enough, and each report should end in one written action.
Search Console is the free tool where Google tells you how your site appears in its results, and most business owners open it twice a year. Twenty minutes a month on five of its reports is enough to catch the problems that cost money: a page that fell out of the index, a sitemap Google can't read, a penalty. Set it up properly once, then run the routine below on the first working day of each month.
What should you set up before the first check?
Three things, once. Each takes minutes, and the second one protects you if you ever change agency.
- Add a Domain property, verified through a DNS record, so that http, https, www and every subdomain count together. If your site has an Arabic folder, also add it as a URL-prefix property, such as https://example.com/ar/, so Arabic reports aren't blended with English ones.
- Make the business the owner. Use a company Google account as Owner and give your agency or developer Full access. If an agency is the only owner and you part ways, you lose your history, so don't let that happen.
- Submit your XML sitemap in the Sitemaps report, once.
What is the 20-minute routine?
Five reports in a fixed order, with a time limit on each: Performance, Pages, Sitemaps, Links, then Manual actions. Stop when the time is up, even if you're curious.
- Performance, 6 minutes. Set the dates to the last 3 months and tick Compare against the previous period. Add a Country filter for United Arab Emirates. Under Queries, add a filter for queries that don't contain your brand name and sort by impressions. Write down every query with plenty of impressions and an average position between 8 and 20. Those pages sit just short of page one, and improving their titles, content and internal links is your month's work. Then open Pages and look for the biggest drops against the previous period. If the report is empty, you're probably in the wrong property.
- Pages, 5 minutes. Open Indexing, then Pages. Look at the chart for a sudden fall in indexed pages, then read the reasons under Why pages aren't indexed. "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" and "Page with redirect" are normal. "Crawled, currently not indexed" on a page that matters is often a sign it's thin or duplicates another, so improve or merge it. "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" means Google chose the canonical itself, so check it chose the right page. "URL marked noindex" and "URL blocked by robots.txt" are problems only if you didn't mean them. Finish by running URL Inspection on your top three money pages and confirming each is on Google.
- Sitemaps, 2 minutes. Each sitemap should show Success, a recent last-read date and a discovered pages count close to the number of pages you want indexed. A count far above that means the sitemap lists redirects, parameter URLs or noindex pages, and the generator needs fixing. If it says it couldn't fetch the file, open the sitemap address in a browser and see what comes back.
- Links, 4 minutes. Under External links, open Top linked pages and check your money pages are on the list. Under Top linking sites, note any supplier, chamber or publication you recognise, and check any link you don't recognise against link-building you've paid for. Under Internal links, find your most important service page. If it sits near the bottom, add links to it from the pages that already rank.
- Manual actions and Security issues, 1 minute. Under Security and Manual Actions, both reports should say no issues are detected. A manual action names the problem and the affected pages: fix them and request a review. Treat a security issue as an emergency.
Then spend two minutes writing down three actions, no more, each with a name and a date. Search Console only pays off if something changes afterwards. Google Search Console in the glossary has the definition if you're sharing this with someone new.
What should you ignore in the Performance report?
A few numbers in the Performance report mislead if you take them literally. Google leaves rare queries out of the tables to protect privacy, so the rows won't add up to the totals. Recent days are incomplete because the data normally takes two or three days to arrive, so don't judge last Tuesday on Wednesday.
Daily data follows California time, which puts it roughly half a day behind the UAE. A single Search Console day straddles two UAE days, so compare weeks and months rather than single days, particularly when you're checking the effect of a launch.
Ramadan is the last trap. Its Gregorian dates shift every year, and Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027, according to projections reported by The National, subject to moon sighting. Compare Ramadan with the weeks before it, not with the same calendar dates last year, when demand was in a different season.
What if a report looks wrong?
- Performance is empty: you may be in the wrong property, or the site is new. Check the property list for the www and non-www versions, and wait a few days after verifying.
- Far fewer pages indexed than your sitemap lists: open the reasons in the Pages report and work down the ones that apply to pages you care about. Our guide to why your website isn't ranking starts from this check.
- A page you changed isn't updating in results: run URL Inspection and use Request indexing once. Google recrawls on its own timetable, and asking repeatedly doesn't speed it up.
- Arabic pages are missing from the reports: open the Arabic property, check the hreflang pairs, and filter Performance queries to Arabic script as described in Arabic keyword research.
To split out the Arabic queries, add a Query filter, choose Custom (regex) and enter \p{Arabic}. Scan the first rows: each query should contain Arabic letters.
If someone else runs this for you, ask for three lines after each monthly check: what changed, what they'll do, and what needs your decision. Whoever runs your SEO, our SEO service included, the property should stay in your company's name. Put the first working day of next month in your calendar now and name the person who owns the check.
Questions people ask
Is Google Search Console free?
Yes. It's free for anyone who can verify they control a website, through a DNS record, an HTML file or a tag. It shows how your site appears in Google results, but not what visitors do afterwards. For that you need an analytics tool such as GA4.
What is the difference between Google Search Console and Google Analytics?
Search Console reports how your site appears in Google Search: impressions, clicks, queries and indexing problems. Analytics reports what visitors do on your site once they arrive, from any source. You need both, and their numbers won't match exactly because they measure different things.
How do I see only my UAE traffic in Search Console?
Open the Performance report, add a Country filter and choose United Arab Emirates. The filter applies to the query and page tables as well. For Arabic queries only, add a Query filter with Custom (regex) and enter the pattern \p{Arabic}.
Why are my pages crawled but not indexed?
Google visited the page and chose not to index it. Often the page is thin, duplicates another or adds little, so improve it or merge it, and link to it from important pages. Check key pages with URL Inspection, and fix the content before asking Google to look again.
How often should I check Search Console?
Once a month for the five reports is enough for most businesses, plus a look after any site change. Check weekly during a launch or migration. Make sure the notification emails go to a mailbox someone actually reads, because manual actions and security issues arrive there.
