Marketing for a small business in the UAE: what to do first, and what to skip
Five things to do in order, four to skip, and a first paid test sized from your margin. For UAE businesses without a marketing team.
The short answer
Do five things in this order: fix your Google Business Profile, build one page that makes enquiring a one-tap job, ask every customer for a review, count where enquiries come from, then test one paid channel. Skip a branding project, every platform, cheap SEO and ads you can't count. In our view, below roughly AED 5,000 a month, hiring help stops making economic sense.
A small business in the UAE should start with the one task no agency can shortcut. Google says a better local position can't be bought or requested, which makes your Google Business Profile the first job, done properly, before any agency, any ad or any logo. The sequence is five things in order, then four to skip, then the point at which paying for help starts to make sense.
In what order should a small business do it?
Profile, page, reviews, counting, then one paid channel, and each step has a test that says it's done.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Choose the right categories, list your services, set hours that show Friday and the weekend exactly as you keep them, add real photos and a WhatsApp number that gets answered. Done when a search for your service and area, on a phone, shows the right details. If verification stalls, fix that first, because the rest of the list leans on it. See the Google Business Profile entry for the terms.
- Build one page that makes enquiring a one-tap job. It should say what you do, for whom, where, how pricing works, and how to reach you by call or WhatsApp without scrolling. Test it twice. Hand your phone to someone who has never seen the page and ask them to find your price and message you on WhatsApp, and if that takes more than a minute, rewrite it. Then check it on mobile data: Google's web.dev guidance is for the main content to load within 2.5 seconds, measured at the 75th percentile of visits, and Largest Contentful Paint is the measure. If the page misses that, fix it before paying to send visitors to it. The pages a UAE business website needs lists what else belongs on the site.
- Ask every customer for a review. Ask when they say thanks, send a direct link, and reply to every review, including the bad ones. Done when asking is a habit rather than a campaign. Google reviews in the UAE covers the rules.
- Count enquiries by source. Ask every new enquiry how they found you, on the form and in your first WhatsApp reply, and log the answers in a sheet. Done when you can say where last month's enquiries came from. Without it you can't tell a working channel from a lucky week.
- Test one paid channel: Google Search if buyers look for what you sell by name, Meta ads if they don't. Size the test from your margin. How to advertise in the UAE has the sum, and the budget formula with worked examples runs more cases. Done when the test has produced enough enquiries to judge.
What should a small business skip?
Four things, whatever a salesperson tells you.
- A branding project. Until you know who buys and why, a new identity is guesswork with good typography. Come back to it when the five steps are working. Should you rebrand? covers how to decide.
- Every platform. Each one needs regular posts and replies, and spread across five platforms none of them gets enough. Pick the one where customers already talk to businesses like yours.
- Cheap SEO. In our view, below roughly AED 5,000 a month the economics stop working: a competent UAE marketer costs more than that to employ, so anything cheaper is either offshore juniors with no oversight or an agency running dozens of accounts on templates. See cheap SEO in Dubai and what digital marketing costs.
- Ads you can't count. A campaign with no way to see which enquiries it produced gives you spend and no information. Do step four first.
How much should the first paid test cost?
As much as you can afford to lose entirely, and no more than your margin allows. Two caps apply, and you use the lower one.
Say the margin sum allows AED 9,000 for the test but losing more than AED 3,000 would hurt. In this made-up case the test is AED 3,000, and the result is a direction rather than a verdict. Google's advice for judging automated bidding is to look at periods with at least 30 conversions, so a small test that produces far fewer should be read as a lead to follow, and a second round should confirm it before you commit more.
When should the first test start?
Start it outside a sale season if you can, because a test that straddles one measures the season as much as the channel. As of November 2026, an eight-week test for a consumer business would overlap White Friday, National Day and the Dubai Shopping Festival. White Friday starts the Friday following US Thanksgiving, which is 27 November in 2026 by the calendar, though retailers hadn't announced dates by 7 November. National Day is a two-day public holiday on 2 and 3 December, subject to a government notice. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, according to its organiser.
If you can't wait, start anyway and read the result as seasonal. A strong December may be the calendar rather than the channel, so rerun the test once the weeks have settled, for example after Eid Al Fitr, expected on 9 or 10 March 2027. Ramadan is expected to begin on 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting, and shopping habits shift again. Write the dates beside the result so you remember what the weeks looked like.
When is it time to pay for help?
When the test has produced a result and your own hours are the limit, not before. If the paid test works and you can't run it and the business at once, help pays for itself. If the test hasn't worked, help won't fix a weak offer, so fix the offer first.
Our own monthly services are priced on scope, and for most of them the starting point is AED 12,000 a month (prices are published). That's more than many small businesses should spend at the start. If that's you, this guide is for doing it yourself, and we'd rather you did.
Today, open your Google Business Profile on a phone and fix the first thing a stranger would notice.
Questions people ask
What is the cheapest way to market a small business in the UAE?
Start with the three tasks that cost hours rather than dirhams: complete your Google Business Profile, give buyers one page where enquiring takes a tap, and ask each customer for a review. Spend money only after those work, and then on one paid channel you can afford to lose.
How much should a small business spend on marketing?
Work from the profit on one customer. Decide what share you'd spend to win them, then divide by the number of enquiries each customer takes to get your ceiling per enquiry. In our view, below roughly AED 5,000 a month, paying for outside help stops making economic sense, so put that money into ads and do the rest yourself.
Which social media platform should a small business start with?
The one where your customers already talk to businesses like yours. Ask your last five customers where they found you. If the answers are unclear, start with Google, then add Instagram for consumers or LinkedIn for company buyers, and run a single one for two months before adding a second.
Do I need a website to market a small business in the UAE?
You need somewhere that answers a buyer's questions and puts contact one tap away. A single well-built page can do that. A Google Business Profile with a working WhatsApp number covers some businesses while the page is built, but your own page is where you control the message.
