Modern Standard Arabic

Also known as: MSA · Fusha · Standard Arabic · الفصحى

Definition

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the formal, standardised written form of Arabic used in news, official documents, education and most published writing across the Arab world. It differs from the regional dialects people speak at home.

The UAE government portal names Arabic as the official language, but no official figure for how many residents read or speak it could be confirmed, so the size of the Arabic audience has to come from your own enquiries. Because MSA is understood across Arabic-speaking countries, one MSA page can serve readers whose dialects differ, which matters in a country where, the portal says, expatriates outnumber nationals.

MSA suits formal and B2B pages, legal and financial notices, healthcare information and headlines. In consumer copy it can read as distant, and searchers often type everyday words in place of the formal ones, so research the wording people actually use before settling titles. Consistency matters more than purity: keep one register within a page.

Decide the register by audience and page, not by habit. Formal service pages in MSA, social copy in the dialect of the target market, a native writer on both and no machine translation is a sound default. Search research should cover both registers, since each produces different queries.

Worked example

Take the word for 'now'. MSA writes الآن, while Gulf speakers say الحين. A formal service page would use the first. A social caption aimed at UAE residents might use the second.
