Arabizi

Also known as: Arabish · Franco-Arab · Arabic chat alphabet

Definition

Arabizi is informal Arabic written in Latin letters and numerals, with digits standing in for Arabic sounds that have no Latin letter, such as 3 for ع and 7 for ح. It grew out of texting and chat rather than formal writing.

There is no standard. Writers choose their own spellings and digits, and the choices vary with dialect and habit, so one phrase can appear in several forms. That makes it hard to research: tools may show nothing for it, and no reliable public figure for how many UAE searches use it could be confirmed. The test costs little. Type the phrase into Google and see what comes back. If the results are Arabic pages or nothing relevant, a page written in Arabizi won't be worth building.

Its main business use is in messages. Customers write to WhatsApp and Instagram accounts in Arabizi, so a chatbot or auto-reply that understands only Arabic script and clean English may misread them. Test any automation with real examples before launch. It also matters when naming a brand, because a name that can be typed several ways in Arabizi scatters its own searches.

Don't confuse it with transliteration of names, which is about spelling one specific name in another script. Arabizi is a whole style of writing. It suits social posts that want a casual tone, and it rarely suits a formal page, where Arabic script or clear English will serve a reader better.
