Large language model (LLM)

Also known as: LLM · language model

Definition

A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on very large amounts of text to predict the next token in a sequence, which lets it write, summarise, translate and answer questions in natural language. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are products built on LLMs.

An LLM generates fluent text from patterns learned in training. It doesn't look facts up. That is why it can state something false with complete confidence, why its knowledge stops at a training cutoff unless it is connected to search or to your own documents, and why those connections matter. For marketing, it is a capable drafter and editor of text and an unreliable witness to facts about your business.

A model is not the same as the product around it. ChatGPT, for example, wraps a model with search, memory and tools, so two products can answer one question differently, and one product can differ between runs. Test the assistants your customers use with the questions your customers ask, rather than relying on how a single model behaves.

In the UAE, use is already widespread. Microsoft's Q2 2026 AI Diffusion report ranked the UAE first, with 73.3% of people aged 15 to 64 having used a generative AI product, against 18.8% worldwide in June 2026. That counts people who have tried one, not daily use or use at work. OpenAI says ChatGPT has about 1.2 billion weekly users worldwide, an unaudited company figure with no UAE breakdown.
