Content cluster

Also known as: topic cluster · pillar and cluster · hub and spoke

Definition

A content cluster is a comprehensive pillar page on a broad topic surrounded by interlinked supporting pages covering specific subtopics, structured so internal links consolidate relevance signals.

The structure does two jobs. It signals to search engines that the site covers a subject exhaustively, and it distributes authority from the pages that earn links to the commercial pages that need to rank. Without deliberate internal linking, neither happens.

Clusters fail when they are planned around keyword lists instead of buyer questions, producing twenty near-duplicate pages that compete with each other. Each supporting page needs a distinct question that a real person would ask.
