Information architecture

Also known as: IA · site structure

Definition

Information architecture is how content on a site is organised, labelled and interlinked — determining both how easily people find what they need and how search engines understand relationships between pages.

Good architecture keeps important pages within a few clicks of the homepage, groups related content so relevance signals concentrate, and uses labels drawn from how customers describe things rather than internal jargon.

It is far cheaper to get right before a build than to retrofit afterwards, because URL structure, navigation and internal linking all depend on it — and changing them later means a migration with real ranking risk.
