Is SEO worth it for a UAE business? How to work it out

SEO pays when a customer is worth enough and enough people search near you. The break-even sum, two made-up examples, and the cases where the answer is no.

The short answer

SEO is worth it when the gross profit from the customers it can realistically bring in over twelve months is bigger than what you'll spend on it. Divide a year of fees and fixes by your gross profit per customer to see how many customers you need, then check that search demand in your area can supply them. If it can't, don't buy it.

SEO is worth it when a year of its cost is smaller than the gross profit from the customers it can realistically bring you, and you can test that on one sheet of paper before speaking to any agency. The cost side is easy to total. The side people skip is the ceiling: how many people near you search for what you sell, and how many of them you could win.

What is the break-even sum?

The sum has five lines, worked in order with gross profit rather than revenue, because revenue ignores what it costs you to deliver the job. Write each line down with your own figures, even rough ones, because a rough sum beats a confident guess.

  1. 01Annual cost: twelve months of fees, plus one-off site fixes, plus the cost of content and of Arabic versions, plus VAT if your business can't recover it (ask your accountant).
  2. 02Customers needed: annual cost divided by the gross profit one customer brings you in their first year.
  3. 03Enquiries needed: customers needed divided by the share of enquiries you close. Count WhatsApp enquiries as enquiries, or you'll undercount.
  4. 04Enquiries needed per month: line 3 divided by 8. Give SEO months 5 to 12 to produce them, because our published timeline has first movement at 3 to 4 months, so plan on four months of nothing.
  5. 05The ceiling: monthly searches for the terms worth having, times the share of those searches that end in a click on your site, times the share of visitors who enquire. If the ceiling is below line 4, SEO won't pay for itself inside the year.

Treat the ceiling with suspicion. A keyword tool reports searches, not visits, and some searches end on Google's own page. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb panel data, as reported by Search Engine Journal, put the share of US Google searches that produced no click at all at 68% for January to April 2026, with 232 open-web clicks per 1,000 searches. It excludes the Google mobile app, covers the US only and has no UAE equivalent that we could find, but it's reason enough to use a pessimistic click share rather than a hopeful one.

What does the sum look like for two different businesses?

Say two made-up businesses each pay AED 12,000 a month for a year and spend AED 20,000 on site fixes and content, a bill of AED 164,000 apiece. Say each closes one enquiry in four. The only difference is what a customer is worth.

On those made-up numbers the studio needs 137 enquiries a month. Say 3% of visitors enquire and 10% of searches end in a click on the site (both invented): that's roughly 46,000 searches a month for detailing terms. Check a real keyword tool before believing a number like that exists in your area, and if it doesn't, the free local basics are a better move than the fee.

The made-up contractor needs 1.5 enquiries a month. On the same invented rates that's about 50 visitors and 500 searches a month for the terms worth having, a ceiling that a niche, high-ticket market may well supply.

The smaller the market, the higher the ticket has to be.

When is SEO not worth buying?

  • The sale window is shorter than the timeline. An off-plan launch with a 90-day sell-through, a clearance sale or a one-off event is over before SEO moves, so the money belongs in paid search and social, as in a 90-day marketing plan for an off-plan launch.
  • The market is small and the ticket is low. The sum fails, as the detailing studio shows, and the free local work in the Google Business Profile guide is the better use of your time.
  • You can't change the site. SEO is mostly edits to your pages, templates and URLs. If a platform or a supplier controls them and won't move, the fee buys reports.
  • Enquiries already go unanswered. A 2011 Harvard Business Review study of 2,241 US companies, quoted by SmartCompany, found that firms which tried to reach a web lead inside an hour were close to seven times as likely to qualify it, meaning to get a decision maker into a real conversation, as firms that tried an hour later. It's an American association from 2011, not proof, but it's reason enough to measure your own speed to lead before paying for more leads.
  • A rebuild is coming within months. New URLs and templates can erase the gains, so put SEO in the brief for the rebuild first, as how to change a site without losing rankings explains.

When is SEO clearly worth it?

SEO is clearly worth it when four things are true at once: customers search before they buy, the sum passes on pessimistic numbers, every enquiry gets an answer within the hour, and you can change your own site. Fit-out, legal and accounting work, B2B supply and property are the kinds of purchase where one customer can carry a high gross profit and the decision takes time, which is the shape SEO suits. Low-ticket consumer services with many local rivals rarely have that shape.

How can you test the ceiling before you spend?

  1. 01Look up monthly searches for the terms worth having in Google's Keyword Planner, which is free to use with a Google Ads account, in English and in Arabic separately.
  2. 02If you already have a site, read Search Console for impressions on searches that don't include your company name. Impressions are the closest thing to your real ceiling.
  3. 03Run a small paid search test for four to six weeks to measure what share of visitors from search actually enquire. SEO or Google Ads first shows how to read the result.
  4. 04Run the sum again with your measured rates instead of invented ones.

The AED 12,000 a month in the sums above is where our SEO service starts, excluding VAT, with the final price following scope. If the sum fails on pessimistic numbers, don't buy SEO from us or anyone else: do the local basics, and run the sum again when your ticket or your market is bigger. A free cost review, a short call and a written answer within 72 hours, is there if you'd like a second opinion on the figures. Otherwise, run the five lines tonight with your own gross profit per customer, because the answer will arrive faster than any proposal.

Questions people ask

01Is SEO worth it for a small business in Dubai?

Parts of it, yes. The local basics, a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews, cost time rather than fees and suit almost any business serving a local area. A paid retainer only makes sense when gross profit per customer is high enough that a handful of customers covers a year of fees.

02How do I work out SEO ROI?

Add a year of fees, one-off fixes and content costs. Divide by your gross profit per customer to get customers needed, then divide by your close rate to get enquiries. Compare that with a pessimistic estimate of monthly searches times click share times enquiry rate, giving SEO months 5 to 12 to produce.

03How long before SEO pays for itself?

Not before the second half of year one. Most sites see movement in 3 to 4 months and competitive terms take 6 to 12, so payback inside the year needs a high gross profit per customer. A low-value product may take much longer, or never break even.

04Is SEO still worth it with AI Overviews?

For pages where the customer still has to book, buy or call, yes, with more caution for informational pages. Pew's March 2025 US data found a traditional result was clicked in 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, a method Google disputes. No UAE figure exists, so use a pessimistic click share in your sum.

05When should I not invest in SEO?

When the sale window is shorter than six months, the site can't be edited, enquiries already go unanswered, a rebuild is imminent, or the break-even sum needs more searches than your area produces. In those cases start with paid search or the free local basics.
