Brand strategy in the UAE: a working definition and a one-page template
Brand strategy is four answers on one page: who you're for, why you, what proves it and how you sound. Here's the template, built to work in two languages.
The short answer
A brand strategy is a one-page decision: who you serve, what you do better than their real alternative, the proof you can show today, and how you sound in each language you use. If a sentence of it would survive on a competitor's website unchanged, it isn't finished. In the UAE it also has to hold up in Arabic and in English.
Write your brand strategy on one page, then say it out loud in Arabic without borrowing a single English word. Wherever it breaks is where the strategy is thin, because a position that only works in one language is usually a slogan.
A working definition: brand strategy is your written answer to four questions. Who exactly are you for? Why should they choose you over what they'd do otherwise? What can you show that proves it? And how do you sound when you say it? The logo and the campaign are ways of expressing the answers, which is why they come second.
How do you write a brand strategy in six steps?
A brand strategy takes six steps, in this order: customer, alternative, position, proof, voice and test. Each step narrows the next, and most end with the fix for when it stalls.
- Choose the customer you'd keep if you could only keep one type. Describe them by situation, not by nationality or age: a household leaving a rented villa before the lease ends, a clinic opening its second branch. If you can't choose, list your last twenty paying customers and pick the type that paid fastest and complained least.
- Name what that customer does if you don't exist. The alternative is rarely the competitor you worry about. It's a friend's recommendation, an in-house hire, a message to a WhatsApp group asking who knows someone, or doing nothing. If you can't name it, ask five customers what else they considered.
- Write the position as one sentence: for [customer], we're the [category] that [difference], because [reason to believe]. Then run the swap test. Replace your name with a competitor's, and if the sentence is still true, the difference isn't a difference. If no difference survives, the problem is the offer, and no amount of branding will fix it.
- List the proof you can show today, not the proof you plan to have: licences and approvals, named staff, completed projects, written prices, reviews with dates. If the proof is thin, narrow the claim until the proof covers it. For a DHA-licensed clinic in Dubai the authority's 2022 standard for medical advertising on social media bars absolute claims such as best and safest, so the position has to rest on something the clinic can document. Check the current version with DHA before you write copy.
- Write the voice as rules with examples, in each language you'll use: a few habits to keep, a list of banned words, and a before-and-after pair for each channel. DataReportal, citing GWI's Q2 2026 survey, reported that 84.1% of UAE internet users aged 16 and over said they'd used WhatsApp in the past month, ahead of YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, so write the examples as chat replies, not brochure copy. If they still sound like every other brand, add a banned-words list and try again.
- Test it before you pay anyone to design it. Show the page to five customers and five staff and ask each to say it back in their own words, then give the Arabic version to an Arabic speaker who hasn't seen the English. As a rule of thumb, if more than two of the ten can't repeat the idea, it's too complicated. Cut until they can.
A multicultural market changes four things
A multicultural market changes how you define the audience, which language you draft in first, which register you choose and how much proof you need. Start with the audience. The UAE government portal says the expatriate community outnumbers UAE nationals and gives no percentage, and we couldn't find an official one either. Treat any precise share in a pitch deck as an estimate, and ask where it comes from.
Define the audience by situation and language instead. Two customers of different nationalities in the same situation, say both leaving a rental before the lease ends, usually need the same message in different languages. Two customers of the same nationality in different situations don't. How to split budget and channels by language is covered in Arabic or English marketing, and targeting in marketing to expats.
The UAE government portal names Arabic as the official language, and for a strategy it's a drafting language, not a translation target. Write the position in each language from one brief, then compare the two. Register is a strategic choice as well: Modern Standard Arabic and Khaleeji Arabic sound different to the same reader, and a bank and a street-food stall shouldn't pick the same one.
Proof carries more weight where a customer has just arrived and has no one to ask. Visible proof, such as named people, written prices, licence details and dated reviews, does the job that word of mouth does elsewhere.
The one-page template, filled in for a made-up company
The template is a table with eight rows, shown here filled in for a made-up Dubai removals company so you can see the level of detail that works.
| Field | What goes in it | Example: a made-up Dubai removals company |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | One situation and one decision-maker, not a demographic. | Households relocating on a fixed date, usually with a landlord handover to pass. |
| Real alternative | What they do if you don't exist. | Ask a WhatsApp group for a van and a crew, and take the cheapest reply. |
| Position | For [customer], we're the [category] that [difference], because [reason to believe]. | For relocating households, the movers who put the full price in writing before the crew arrives, because every quote comes with a signed inventory. |
| Proof | What you can show today. | The signed inventory, crew names sent the night before, dated reviews that mention the final bill. |
| What we won't do | The boundary that makes the position believable. | Quote by phone without a list of what's being moved. |
| Voice | Rules and before-and-after examples, per language. | "We'll confirm the price in writing" instead of "competitive rates". Arabic written from the same brief by an Arabic writer, not translated. |
| Language rule | Which language leads on which surface. | English on corporate relocation quotes. Arabic and English side by side on the vans and the WhatsApp greeting. |
| Test | What result would prove the position wrong. | If quotes sent with a signed inventory don't convert to bookings more often than quotes without one, drop the claim. |
If you can't fill a row, don't write something plausible. Mark it unknown and make finding out the first job, because a confident guess in a strategy document turns into a campaign.
Do you need to pay someone to write it?
Only if the people who have to live with the strategy can't agree on who the customer is. If you can fill the page in an afternoon and the partners agree, spend the money on carrying it out instead.
If two partners give different answers, the argument is costing you more than a facilitated strategy stage would. That stage is the first thing a branding agency should run before it touches a logo, and what a branding agency delivers shows what to expect from it. Fill in the table tonight: the rows where you hesitate are where the money should go.
Questions people ask
What is brand strategy in simple terms?
Brand strategy is the set of decisions about who your business is for, how it differs from the alternatives and how it should sound, written so anyone in the company can apply it. It comes before the logo, because the logo only expresses those decisions.
What's the difference between brand strategy and marketing strategy?
Brand strategy fixes who you're for and what you stand for, and it changes rarely. A marketing strategy decides which channels and offers to use this year, and with what budget, to reach those people. A marketing plan without a brand strategy chases whatever channel looks cheapest, and a brand strategy without a plan never reaches anyone.
Should a brand strategy be a full deck or one page?
One page for the strategy itself, with an appendix for evidence and voice examples. If the core can't fit on a page, people won't remember it, so it won't shape what they write, design or say. Longer decks are fine as supporting material, but the page is the strategy.
Does a UAE brand strategy have to be written in Arabic as well as English?
If Arabic-speaking customers matter to you, draft the position natively in both languages rather than translating one. Test it by saying the position in Arabic without English words. Where it fails, the idea probably leans on English wordplay and needs rewriting. The Arabic version may use different proof or register, but it should say the same thing.
Can a small business write its own brand strategy?
Yes, if the owners can answer the first row of the template, who the customer is, without arguing. The work is thinking, not design. Fill in the page, test it with five customers and five staff, and only then brief a designer. Bring in help when the people in the room disagree.
