Title tag

Also known as: page title · title element · SEO title

Definition

A title tag is the HTML element that sets a page's title, shown in the browser tab and often used by Google as the clickable headline of a search result. Google may rewrite it when another title describes the page better.

There is no official length limit. Google shortens titles to fit the space available, which depends on width and device, so a tool that gives a pass or fail at a fixed character count is guessing. Put the words that identify the page first, write for someone deciding whether to click, and add the brand name at the end if at all.

Every page needs its own title. Duplicated or templated titles make pages hard to tell apart in results, and titles that are empty, repeated across pages or stuffed with phrases are common reasons for Google to write its own. Keep the title and the visible heading saying the same thing.

Arabic pages need their own Arabic titles, written from the Arabic query and not translated from the English title, because the wording people type often differs from the dictionary equivalent. Search for the page's topic and compare what shows in results with the tag you wrote. If Google has replaced it, ask why before changing it back.

Worked example

Say a made-up Jumeirah dental clinic has a page on teeth whitening. A weak title is 'Home | Example Clinic', which says nothing and repeats across the site. A stronger one is 'Teeth whitening in Jumeirah: how it works and what to expect | Example Clinic', which names the service, the place and the reader's question.
