Meta description

Also known as: description tag · SEO description · snippet text

Definition

A meta description is an HTML tag that summarises a page in a sentence or two. Google may show it as the snippet beneath a result, but often writes its own from the page text, so its job is to earn the click, not to lift the ranking.

Google sets no limit on its length. It trims the snippet to fit the width of the screen, and it often replaces the tag with text from the page that matches the query better. A description is therefore a suggestion, and a page whose opening paragraph answers the question clearly gives Google a good snippet to choose, with or without the tag.

Write each one for a person. Say what the page contains and add one concrete detail, such as the price basis, the area covered, the languages offered or the date the information was checked. Give every page its own description, since identical ones across a site waste the space, and write the Arabic descriptions for Arabic searchers instead of translating the English line.

Treat it as advertising copy. A price, a promise or a date in the description must match the page and be kept current, and superlatives such as 'best' add risk without adding information. To test a change, pick pages with many impressions but few clicks in Search Console, rewrite the description, and compare click-through rate after a few weeks.
