On-page SEO

Also known as: on-site SEO · on-page optimisation

Definition

On-page SEO is the optimisation of what sits on a page itself: its content, title tag, headings, meta description, images, internal links and structured data. The aim is to make clear what the page is about and who it is for.

The first job is matching the page to the intent behind the query. A page about the right thing but of the wrong type, such as a service page for a question that wants a guide, won't rank however well it is tagged. After that come the elements that make a page's purpose plain: a title and main heading that say what it is, an answer near the top, headings phrased as the questions people ask, descriptive image alt text, links to related pages, and structured data that matches what is visible.

Counting how many times a phrase appears isn't a method. Reading the page as the searcher would is. Repeating a phrase until the copy reads badly lowers quality without adding clarity, and the same goes for titles and descriptions written for a tool's score instead of for a person deciding whether to click.

Work in order of return. Start with pages that already earn impressions but few clicks, where a better title or description can lift click-through quickly. Then take pages stuck on the second page of results, where depth, a clearer answer or better internal links may move them. Last come new pages for gaps that research shows. Optimising pages that are not indexed is wasted effort until the indexing problem is fixed.
