Abandoned cart
Definition
An abandoned cart is a basket where a shopper added items but left before paying. The abandonment rate is the share of started carts that never become orders, and the usual response is a reminder by email, WhatsApp or retargeting ad.
Find where people leave before you send a single reminder. A shopper who hit a payment error or a surprise delivery fee won't be rescued by a discount code, and a reminder to someone who was only comparing prices mostly annoys. Reminders work on people who meant to buy and were interrupted, so check the checkout steps, the payment failures and the delivery-fee reveal first.
WhatsApp suits the UAE: in GWI's Q2 2026 survey, 84.1 per cent of UAE internet users aged 16 and over said they had used it in the past month, though that is self-reported usage, not a promise of response. It needs opt-in and, outside the 24-hour window, an approved template, and Meta prices messages by category, so find out which category a reminder falls into before you budget. TDRA's FAQ requires prior explicit consent for marketing text messages. Send the reminder first and hold any discount for the second message, or shoppers learn to abandon on purpose.
Cart abandonment rate = (Carts created minus orders completed) ÷ Carts created × 100
Say 1,000 carts were started in a week and 300 became orders: 700 were abandoned, a rate of 70 per cent.
