Is Shopify good for SEO? What UAE stores need to fix
Shopify is good enough for SEO that the platform is rarely what holds a UAE store back. Here are the limits, and the fixes that matter, in order.
The short answer
Yes, for most UAE stores. Shopify generates a sitemap, sets canonical tags on products and writes hreflang for the languages you publish, so the platform is rarely the problem. What holds stores back is theme code that links to duplicate product URLs, too many apps, duplicate markup and untranslated Arabic. The fixed URL prefixes are a limit you can ignore.
Yes. Shopify does enough of the technical work that the platform is rarely why a UAE store fails to rank, and what does hold stores back sits mostly in the theme, the apps and the content. That makes this a fix list rather than a warning, and the first check takes a few minutes.
Two tests settle most of the question: can search engines crawl and understand the store, and can you change what they see? Shopify passes the first and passes the second with limits. Speed is a third question, and the answer there depends on how many apps you've piled on.
What does Shopify already do for you?
It builds the XML sitemap automatically, puts a canonical tag on product pages that points at the plain /products/ address, generates hreflang tags for the languages and markets you publish, lets you edit robots.txt through a template, and keeps a redirect manager that accepts CSV imports. Most of that works without a developer, which is the real SEO advantage of a hosted platform.
Do the fixed URL prefixes hurt?
Not enough to matter. Shopify forces /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ into your addresses, and you can't remove them. Google's e-commerce guidance says it generally doesn't use URL structure to understand a site and looks at the links between pages instead, so /products/black-abaya competes on the same terms as /black-abaya would.
The cost shows up in one place, a migration. Moving to Shopify from a site with different URL patterns changes nearly every address, so the redirect map matters more than the prefix, and changing your website without losing your rankings covers how to build it.
What should a UAE Shopify store fix first?
The table runs in the order we'd check, from the cheapest test to the most involved. Each row has a test you can run without a developer.
| Fix | How to test | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Product links that go through collection paths | On a collection page, hover over a product card. If the address contains /collections/ and then /products/, the card links to the long version while the page's canonical names the short one. | Ask your developer to link product cards to the plain /products/ address in the theme code, so the canonical tag and your internal links agree. |
| Apps that slow the store | Run a product page through PageSpeed Insights, switch off one app at a time and run it again. | Remove apps you can't tie to revenue. Uninstalling doesn't always remove the code an app added to the theme, so have a developer check the theme files. |
| Duplicate product markup | Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. Two Product items can mean the theme and a review app are both writing markup. | Keep one source of structured data and turn the other off. |
| Thin collection pages | List your collections. Any with no description and a handful of products is a thin page with a URL. | Write a short buying guide for collections that match real searches, and merge or unpublish the rest. |
| One URL for every variant | Open a product with colour options. The address stays the same when the colour changes, apart from a variant parameter. | If shoppers search by colour, give each popular colour its own collection page, or its own product where the colour is a different product in practice. |
| Markets that share one address | View the source of a page in each language and market, and look for hreflang lines. | Give each language its own subfolder or domain in Shopify Markets. If AED and SAR prices sit on one URL, Google sees one page. |
The first row is the one worth doing even if you do nothing else. It's usually a small theme change, and it removes a mismatch that repeats on every collection page. Understanding why starts with canonical tags and duplicate content.
Does Shopify handle Arabic?
It can publish a store in Arabic, but publishing and ranking are separate jobs. Shopify's Markets documentation says it writes hreflang tags for languages published on their own address, and that part works without effort. The effort is in the content: collections, pages, navigation, product text and the buttons your theme writes in English.
Check three things before you publish. Your theme must render right-to-left properly on a phone, a native writer should produce the category and product text rather than an app, and the page source of each Arabic page should list its English counterpart. Arabic SEO: how Arabic search really behaves explains why Arabic needs its own research before any of that.
When is Shopify the wrong platform for SEO?
When your plan depends on custom URL patterns, server-level rules or thousands of generated pages. Shopify's fixed structure and hosted setup fight you there, and a different platform may suit better. A store selling a few hundred products with a plain structure won't meet those limits.
Choosing a platform for SEO reasons alone is usually a mistake, because payments, shipping and your team's skills decide more. WordPress, Shopify or Webflow for a UAE business weighs those, and does Shopify work in the UAE covers payments and delivery. Our e-commerce marketing service covers Shopify and similar platforms, and the table above is a fair checklist to hold any agency to, ours included.
Three checks cover the essentials. Hover over a product card on a collection page, run one product through PageSpeed Insights, and view the source of your Arabic home page for hreflang lines. Between them they test duplicate links, slow apps and language signals.
Questions people ask
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. It generates a sitemap, sets canonical tags on products and writes hreflang for the languages you publish. Stores lose ground through theme code, too many apps, duplicate markup and thin collection pages, all of which can be fixed. The fixed /products/ and /collections/ prefixes are a cosmetic limit.
Can I remove /products/ and /collections/ from Shopify URLs?
No. Shopify keeps those prefixes in product and collection addresses, and editing a URL handle changes only the part after them. Google's guidance says it generally relies on links rather than URL structure to understand a site, so the prefixes don't need fixing.
Does Shopify create duplicate content?
A product can be reachable at its plain address and at an address through a collection. Shopify sets the canonical tag to the plain one, so Google is told which to use, but theme links that point to the long version send mixed signals. Link to the plain address in the theme.
Can Shopify handle an Arabic and English store?
Yes. Shopify Markets writes hreflang tags for languages published on distinct addresses, such as subfolders. You still need native Arabic content, a theme that supports right-to-left, and a check of each page's source to confirm it lists its counterpart.
Do Shopify apps hurt SEO?
They can, indirectly, by slowing the store. Run a product page through PageSpeed Insights, switch off one app at a time and re-test. Remove what you can't tie to revenue, and have a developer check the theme for code an uninstalled app left behind.
