Does Shopify work in the UAE? Payments, shipping and set-up

Yes, a UAE business can open a Shopify store. What needs checking is payments, cash on delivery, couriers, Arabic and VAT, and a test plan for each.

The short answer

Yes, a UAE business can open a Shopify store, and the store is the easy part. What needs checking is the plumbing: which payment providers will connect to your UAE bank account, whether cash on delivery and buy now pay later can be switched on, which couriers have working connections, and how Arabic and VAT are set. Confirm each on the day you build, because availability changes.

Start a Shopify trial, set the business address to the UAE and the currency to dirhams, and you have a store. That was never the hard part. A store can't take card payments until a payment provider has approved your company, so the first job is the payment application, not the theme.

One caution about this page. Shopify changes which features it offers in which country, and we haven't verified its current UAE terms for this article. Treat the table below as questions to put to Shopify and to each provider, write down the date you asked, and don't build on an answer you've only assumed.

What should you confirm before you build a Shopify store in the UAE?

Seven things decide whether a UAE store can trade, and each has a bad answer that should stop you before you pay for design.

What to confirmAskA bad answer
Card paymentsWhich payment providers Shopify lists for a store with a UAE address, whether each will accept your licence type (mainland or free zone), and how long settlement into your UAE bank account takesNo listed provider takes your licence type, or the fees and settlement time arrive as "we'll confirm after approval"
Shopify's own payment serviceWhether Shopify's list of countries for its own payment service includes the UAE today. If it doesn't, ask what extra transaction fee Shopify charges on orders paid through other providers, on your planNobody will state the percentage before you commit
Cash on deliveryShopify has a manual payment method for it, which records the order and nothing more. Who confirms the buyer, and who reconciles the cash your courier collects?Your courier can't say when collected cash reaches your account, or in which report
Buy now, pay laterWhether Tabby and Tamara offer a connection for your store, what they charge you per order, and how soon you're paidFees and payout timing aren't shared until after you apply
CouriersWhether your courier has a Shopify connection or a file format you can import, can collect cash on delivery, and tells you which address fields it needs, such as emirate, area, building, landmark and a phone number the driver can callEvery order has to be keyed into the courier's portal by hand
ArabicWhether the theme supports right-to-left, and whether the cart, checkout and order emails read correctly in Arabic on a phoneThe storefront is in Arabic but the receipts still arrive in English
VAT and invoicesHow the tax rate and the display of prices with or without VAT are set, agreed with your accountant, and whether the order documents carry what a UAE tax invoice needs, such as your tax registration numberNobody can show you a sample invoice before launch

How do UAE customers pay, and what should a new store offer?

Cards through your payment provider are the floor, and cash on delivery and buy now pay later are the two choices that need a decision. Cash on delivery is shrinking, not gone: Checkout.com's State of Digital Commerce in MENA 2025 report says cash on delivery usage in the UAE has fallen 53% since 2020. That's a fall in use, not today's share of orders, and no credible current share was available, so your own order data is the only number that counts.

Buy now, pay later is moving into UAE credit records. Gulf News reported on 27 July 2026 that Etihad Credit Bureau, the federal credit agency, will reflect Tabby and Tamara transactions in UAE credit reports from July 2026. Wamda reported in September 2026 that Tabby has 25 million registered users and 70,000 business partners across all its markets, and no UAE-only count was available. The post on buy now, pay later for online stores covers whether it pays for itself.

What does cash on delivery cost you when the parcel comes back?

A parcel that returns to the seller is called return to origin, or RTO, and it's the number to watch if you offer cash on delivery. Quiqup, a UAE delivery company, said in May 2026 that return-to-origin rates for many UAE merchants sit between 20% and 35%, and that a realistic target is under 10%. That's a delivery company's own estimate, not an official figure, and it's reason enough to measure yours.

A returned parcel means paying for logistics twice, as Quiqup puts it. Work out what one failed order costs: delivery out, delivery back, packaging and handling, and the advertising spend that produced the order. Say delivery costs AED 20 each way, packing AED 5 and the ad spend behind the order AED 40, all made up. On those made-up figures a failed parcel would cost AED 85 before you've sold anything.

Quiqup's June 2026 advice is to confirm orders on WhatsApp, nudge buyers towards prepaying and validate addresses. The post on reducing failed cash on delivery orders goes through each of them.

Automating those confirmations on the WhatsApp Business Platform has a price. Meta has charged per delivered message since 1 July 2025, and from 1 October 2026 service messages and utility messages sent in response to users are charged again, with the first 1,000 delivered service messages a month per phone number free. Meta's change table also lists a UAE marketing rate increase from that date, so get the dirham rate card from Meta or your provider, because this page can't quote it.

Will Shopify handle Arabic and VAT?

Treat Arabic as a test, not a feature. Pick the theme, switch it to Arabic and go through the cart, checkout and order emails on a phone, because the storefront, the checkout and the notification emails are handled separately and a store can get the first right and leave the others in English. The right-to-left guide has the full test pack.

The Ministry of Finance publishes UAE VAT as introduced on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%. Set the rate, and whether prices show with VAT included, with your accountant rather than from a template, and ask whether the order documents carry what a tax invoice needs. If you plan to ship to other GCC countries, ask how VAT changes by destination before you switch international shipping on. This isn't tax advice.

How do you test all of this before paying a developer?

Run these seven steps in a free trial, in order, and write down the date and the answer at each one.

  1. 01Start a trial store with the UAE as the business address and dirhams as the currency, and open the payment settings. Screenshot the providers it offers for your country, with the date.
  2. 02Send each provider the same four questions: will you accept my licence type, what do you charge per transaction, how long does settlement into my UAE account take, and how long does approval take. Keep the replies.
  3. 03Add cash on delivery as a manual payment method and place a test order. Look at what your staff would see, and decide who confirms the buyer and who reconciles the courier's cash.
  4. 04Ask your courier for its Shopify connection or import format, the address fields it requires and its cash remittance schedule.
  5. 05Open a theme demo, switch it to Arabic and check the cart, checkout and emails on a phone.
  6. 06Set the VAT rate with your accountant, place a test order and read the invoice together.
  7. 07Compare the courier's rates with what you plan to charge for delivery, emirate by emirate, before you promise free shipping.

If you can't get a written yes on payments within a couple of weeks, don't pay for design yet. Sell through a marketplace or take orders on WhatsApp in the meantime, and read marketplace or your own store before choosing which.

Send the four questions in step 2 today, because the replies set your launch date. Hold any e-commerce marketing spend until a test order has gone through payment and delivery, since before that every advertised click ends at a store that can't complete the sale.

Questions people ask

01Is Shopify available in the UAE?

Yes, a UAE business can open a Shopify store and set the currency to dirhams. What varies by country is the payment side: which providers connect to your bank, whether cash on delivery and buy now pay later are available, and which couriers have integrations. Check those on the day you build, because Shopify changes them.

02Does Shopify Payments work in the UAE?

Check Shopify's current list of supported countries for its own payment service, because we haven't verified it for this article and it changes. If the UAE isn't on the list, you'll use a third-party payment provider and should ask Shopify what extra transaction fee applies on your plan. Don't price your margins until you have that percentage in writing.

03Can I offer cash on delivery on Shopify?

Yes, Shopify has a manual payment method for it. It only records the order, so you have to decide who confirms the buyer by WhatsApp or call, how the courier collects and remits the cash, and what happens when a parcel comes back. Track return to origin separately, because a failed delivery costs you shipping twice.

04Does Shopify support Arabic and right-to-left?

Shopify storefronts can be translated into Arabic, but right-to-left layout depends on the theme, and the checkout and order emails are translated separately. Choose a theme that supports right-to-left, then test the cart, checkout and emails in Arabic on a phone before you pay for any customisation.

05Do I need to charge VAT on a Shopify store in the UAE?

That depends on whether your business is VAT-registered and what you sell, so ask your accountant. The standard rate is 5%, and the Federal Tax Authority publishes the registration threshold. Set the rate, and whether prices include VAT, with your accountant, and check the order documents carry what a tax invoice needs. This isn't tax advice.
