Local SEO in Dubai: how to show up in Maps and local results

You can't pay Google for a better Maps position. What decides local results in Dubai, and eight steps to show up, from the pin to multi-branch set-ups.

The short answer

To show up in Google Maps in Dubai, complete and verify a Google Business Profile, pick the primary category that matches your main service, make your address findable the way people navigate here, and earn reviews. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, and says you can't request or pay for a better position.

You can't pay Google for a better local ranking, and a Dubai business can't change where its customers stand when they search. That leaves two levers: relevance, which you can fix this afternoon, and prominence, which takes months. Google's own Business Profile help is explicit that a better local ranking can't be requested or paid for.

How does Google decide who appears in local results?

Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, a factor its help page explains as prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and prominence draws on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews it has, so reviews help but don't guarantee a position on their own.

Distance is where Dubai behaves differently from most cities. The emirate is long and thin, so a searcher in the Marina is near different businesses from a searcher in Deira, and a firm in Al Quoz can win in Al Quoz and not appear in JBR. There is no citywide ranking, which means you should check your position from where your customers stand, not from your office.

Run a simple test. Ask a friend or colleague in each neighbourhood you serve to search your main service on their phone and screenshot the first few map results, known as the local pack. The differences between those screenshots show the market you're really competing in.

What are the steps to show up in Maps?

Eight steps, in order, with what to do when one doesn't go to plan.

  1. 01Search for your business on Google Maps before you create anything. A listing may already exist, started by Google or by someone else, and a second one splits your reviews. If it exists, claim it. If a former agency or owner already claimed it, use the ownership request and have your trade licence ready.
  2. 02Choose the primary category by asking what a customer would type. The primary category tells Google what you are, so pick the most specific one that fits and add secondary categories only for services you really provide. If your exact category isn't listed, pick the closest and name the service in the services list and on your website.
  3. 03Enter the address the way people find you here: building name, floor or unit, area. Drop the pin on the entrance customers will use, not the middle of a tower or a developer's office. Put your Makani number and the nearest Metro station or landmark on your website's contact page so a customer can paste them into a map. If your trade licence address isn't where customers visit, use the address where they visit.
  4. 04Set hours that match when someone actually answers, and set special hours before every holiday. Private companies set their own working week, so there's no default to copy. The government portal lists 2 and 3 December as the National Day holiday, and the Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, so schedule holiday hours now, plus extended festival hours if you'll trade longer, after checking for a government notice. If a holiday is announced late, update the special hours the same day, because a wrong time costs you a visit and a bad review.
  5. 05Make the website agree with the profile. Use the same business name, address format and phone number on both (NAP consistency), and give each location its own page with a map, opening hours, parking and entrance details. If the two disagree, Google has two versions of the truth to choose between.
  6. 06Ask every customer for a review and answer every review. Getting more Google reviews covers the WhatsApp link and what not to do. If reviews stall, test the link on two phones before blaming customers.
  7. 07Earn links and mentions from places that know you: your landlord or building directory, suppliers and partners, industry bodies, event organisers you sponsor, local press. Prominence draws on links, so ask each for a link to the page that matches your profile. If nobody links to you yet, start with suppliers and partners, who are the easiest to ask.
  8. 08Measure what the profile produces. Add tracking parameters to the website link on the profile (UTM parameters) so analytics can separate profile visits from the rest, and log calls, direction requests and WhatsApp taps by month. If calls drop after you change a category or the hours, change it back and write down what happened.

Do multi-branch and service-area businesses work differently?

Yes. A multi-branch business needs one profile for each staffed location, and a service-area business needs a profile that hides its address.

  • Multi-branch: give each branch its own profile, phone number, page and reviews, named as the signage reads. Never create a profile for an area you merely serve. A branch with no page of its own gives Google less to connect its profile to.
  • Service-area businesses, such as plumbers, AC technicians, movers and mobile salons: if customers don't visit you, hide the address and list the areas you actually travel to. Listing the whole emirate when you cover four districts invites calls you can't serve.
  • Shared and virtual offices: a flexi-desk address on your trade licence can be a legal address and still be the wrong address for a profile, because customers can't visit you there and such addresses are usually ineligible. Treat the business as service-area instead.

How do Arabic and spelling variants change local SEO?

Place names have several English spellings and Arabic forms, so use the one on your signage and mention the common variants in your page text. Jumeirah is also written Jumeira, and customers type both. If both English and Arabic speakers use you, write the description and service names in both languages and expect reviews in both, as transliteration explains.

How long before local SEO works?

Prominence builds over months as reviews and links accumulate, so judge the first month on what you control: a complete, verified profile, a review routine that's running, and a website that agrees with it. Website SEO takes 3 to 4 months to show movement on our published timeline, and local results need the same patience.

The core of local SEO costs time, not fees. If you want it run for you, our SEO service starts from AED 12,000 a month before VAT, and the Google Business Profile guide covers set-up and verification in detail. Tonight, search your main service plus your area on your phone, open the top three profiles, and write down their categories, review counts and photos. That gap is your plan.

Questions people ask

01How much does local SEO cost in Dubai?

The core work, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and a clear page for each location, costs time rather than fees, and Google says you can't pay for a better local ranking. If you want it run for you, our SEO work starts from AED 12,000 a month, excluding VAT, priced on scope.

02Can I pay to rank higher on Google Maps?

No. Google's Business Profile help says you can't request or pay for a better local ranking, and that local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and popularity. Anyone selling a guaranteed Maps position is selling the work of improving those factors, not the position itself.

03Do I need a Makani number for Google Maps?

No, Google doesn't require one. Makani is Dubai's address numbering, and putting yours on your website's contact page, with a description of the entrance, helps customers who navigate by it. The accuracy of your profile's pin and address matters more.

04How many Google Business Profiles can I have?

One for each staffed location where customers can visit you, each with its own phone number, page and reviews. A service-area business uses one profile with a hidden address and a list of areas served. Profiles for areas you only serve, or for a shared office address, put the listing at risk.

05How do I rank for near me searches in Dubai?

You can't target them directly, because Google measures distance from the searcher. Keep the pin and address accurate, choose the right primary category, collect reviews and keep a page for each location. Then check your ranking from the neighbourhoods your customers search in, not from your office.
