Eleven Google Ads mistakes UAE businesses make
Eleven Google Ads mistakes that waste money in UAE accounts, from location settings to uncounted calls, each with where to look in the account to check it.
The short answer
Eleven Google Ads mistakes waste money in UAE accounts, and most are settings or tracking gaps rather than strategy: location set to presence or interest, search partners and Display left on, broad match without negatives, calls that can't be counted, a soft action marked as the primary conversion, and every ad sent to the homepage. Most take an afternoon to fix.
Three of the eleven mistakes below start as defaults or recommendations from Google: how location is read, whether search partners and the Display Network are on, and how much of the account Google may change for you. Nobody decides to waste money on them. The account simply does what it was set up to do until someone looks.
Where do you look for each of the eleven?
| Mistake | Where to look | What you want to see |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Location | Campaign settings: Locations, then Location options | 'Presence' selected, unless you sell to people abroad |
| 2. Networks | Campaign settings: Networks | Only Google Search ticked, until Search pays back |
| 3. Broad match | The search terms report | No irrelevant searches among the biggest spenders, and negatives added weekly |
| 4. Languages | The campaign list | One campaign per language |
| 5. Calls | Conversions, then the call actions | A plan that doesn't rely on forwarding numbers, and a call log that records the source |
| 6. WhatsApp | Conversions, plus your WhatsApp inbox or CRM | Taps counted, and chats labelled by source and by whether they were real |
| 7. Primary conversion | The conversions summary | One Primary action, and it is the real enquiry |
| 8. Landing pages | The final URLs on your ads | Each ad group landing on its own page |
| 9. Prices | Your ads and the pages they open | Prices and offers you can honour, with the conditions visible |
| 10. Ownership | Admin, then Access and security | Your own login listed as Admin |
| 11. Auto-apply | Recommendations, then Auto-apply | Nothing switched on that nobody chose |
Which mistakes are settings you can fix in ten minutes?
1. Location set to 'Presence or interest'
Google's recommended location option, 'Presence or interest', extends your reach to anyone who has shown interest in the area, wherever they are, so a Dubai plumber's ad can be shown to someone abroad who searched for Dubai flats. In the campaign's Settings, expand Locations, open Location options and select 'Presence' for any business that serves customers in person. The exception is a company selling Dubai property to overseas buyers, who want that wider reach.
2. Search partners and the Display Network left on
Google's help page says a new Search campaign includes search partners by default, and the Display Network box has been reported as pre-ticked in some set-ups and merely recommended in others. Both put your ads somewhere other than Google Search, which muddies the numbers you use to judge Search. Untick them in the campaign's Networks setting, and test them later as a separate experiment if you want to.
3. Broad match with no negatives
Broad match lets Google show your ad for searches it considers related, and without negative keywords that includes searches for jobs, free help and do-it-yourself guides. Google recommends broad match only alongside Smart Bidding, which in turn assumes the account is recording real enquiries. Start with exact and phrase match, add broad match one ad group at a time once the account has recorded 30 conversions, and check the search terms report weekly.
4. Arabic and English sharing one campaign
Google sets language targeting for the whole campaign, so a mixed English and Arabic campaign blends two audiences into one cost per enquiry and you can't see which language pays. It also invites someone to translate the English ads and call the job done. Build one campaign per language, have the Arabic written natively, and give each its own landing page. Arabic ad copy covers how to write it.
Which mistakes hide the loss?
5. Assuming Google tracks your phone calls
Google's call reporting depends on forwarding numbers, and the list of countries where Google offers them did not include the UAE when it was read on 7 November 2026. Google can still count taps on a call button, but a tap is not a call, and it doesn't tell you whether anyone picked up. Log the source of every call in your own system, add a third-party call tracker if the volume justifies one, and check Google's country list again before you plan around it.
6. Counting WhatsApp taps and stopping there
A tap on a WhatsApp button opens the app, not a conversation, and some taps never become a message. Fire a conversion event on the tap, then count the chats that actually start from your inbox or CRM and mark which were real enquiries. Ask whoever answers to record where each chat came from, because the chat itself won't say.
7. A soft action marked as the primary conversion
Google bids toward actions marked Primary and only observes those marked Secondary. When a page view, a scroll or a click on a menu is Primary, bidding learns to find people who do those things cheaply. Open the conversions page, make the real enquiry the single Primary action, and demote everything softer. The conversion tracking guide shows how to build the real one.
Which mistakes happen after the click and around the account?
8. Sending every ad to the homepage
A homepage serves every visitor, so it answers none of them well. Someone who searched for office deep cleaning should land on a page about office deep cleaning, in the language they searched in, with a price or the next step visible without scrolling. Landing pages for UAE ads covers what belongs above the fold.
9. Advertising a price or offer you can't honour
A price in an ad should be one a customer can actually get, with the conditions visible on the page. The UAE government portal lists prison terms of up to two years and fines of up to AED 2 million for suppliers who advertise misleading prices, so a 'from' price that few customers qualify for is a risk and not a clever hook. Confirm the current position with the Ministry of Economy, because this isn't legal advice.
10. Running the account from someone else's login
If a freelancer or agency created the account under their own email, they control the history, the billing and the right to leave. Open Admin, then Access and security, and check that your own login is listed as Admin. If it isn't, get the Admin role added before anything else changes, and use the agency checklist for what to ask next time.
11. Accepting every recommendation Google makes
The Recommendations page and the optimisation score come from the platform that earns when you spend more, and Auto-apply lets it make changes on your behalf. Some suggestions are sound, but budget and bidding changes can alter your spend without anyone deciding they should. Check Auto-apply under Recommendations, switch off anything nobody chose, and judge the account by cost per qualified lead rather than by the score.
If you have ten minutes now, check 1, 2, 7 and 11 first, because all four are settings and none needs a developer. The account set-up guide shows the build that avoids all eleven, and our PPC and Google Ads service is the place to start if you would rather someone else ran the audit.
Questions people ask
What is the most common Google Ads mistake?
There is no sourced league table, so rank the mistakes by what they cost you. Three are easy to miss: a location option that includes people outside the UAE, search partners left on, and tracking that counts the wrong action. All three can be checked in the account's settings in ten minutes.
Should I use broad match in Google Ads?
Only once the account counts real enquiries. Google recommends pairing broad match with Smart Bidding, and the pairing needs conversion data and a solid negative keyword list. New accounts are safer on exact and phrase match, adding broad match one ad group at a time and reading the search terms report weekly.
Why is my Google Ads getting clicks from outside the UAE?
Most likely the location option is set to 'Presence or interest', Google's recommended default, which includes people who have shown interest in your target area. Switch to 'Presence' in the campaign's location options. The exception is a business that deliberately sells to people abroad, such as an agent marketing Dubai property to overseas investors.
Which Google Ads settings should I check first?
Start with four that need no developer: the location option, the networks box, the list of Primary conversion actions and Auto-apply under Recommendations. Together they decide who sees your ads, where they appear, what bidding chases and how much Google may change without asking. Ten minutes in the account will show whether any of them needs fixing.
