Brand mentions in AI search: why other people's pages matter

Nobody outside the labs knows how much weight assistants give outside pages. What is verifiable, how to audit your mentions, and how to earn them honestly.

The short answer

Assistants describe your business from pages they've read or can retrieve, and many of those pages aren't yours. Nobody outside the labs can say how much weight an assistant gives them, but Google does say links and reviews feed local prominence. Audit which outside pages come up for your category, correct what's wrong, and earn accurate mentions honestly: no bought reviews, no unlabelled paid placements.

Ask an assistant who you are, then read the sources it cites, if it shows any. Tag every page: yours, a profile you control, written by someone else for free, or paid for. The third group is what this post is about, and if it's empty you've learned something worth knowing.

How much do other people's pages matter to AI answers?

Nobody outside the labs can give you a weight, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. What's solid is narrower. An assistant describes a business from pages it has read or can retrieve, and a page you didn't write is one you can't edit and that nobody on your team is watching.

The documented example comes from Google's help page on local ranking. It names relevance, distance and popularity, explains the last under the heading prominence, and says prominence draws on links from other websites and on reviews. That describes Google's local results, not ChatGPT or Perplexity, so read it as proof that outside signals count somewhere, not as a measured weight for AI.

There's also a plain reading from how you'd check a claim yourself. A page you wrote saying you're reliable is a claim, and a second page by someone with no stake saying the same is evidence. A system that gathers pages before it answers faces the same choice, which is why independent pages are worth earning even though the weight is unknown.

How do you find the outside pages an assistant is using?

Run your category questions through the assistants, list every source they cite, and sort the list.

  1. 01Take ten of the category and comparison questions from your measurement panel.
  2. 02Ask each on two or three assistants, and copy every source named, with the date.
  3. 03Sort the sources: your own site, profiles you control, independent pages that mention you, independent pages that don't, and paid or sponsored pages.
  4. 04Count the independent pages that mention you. If the count is zero, you've found the gap.
  5. 05Look at the independent pages that mention your competitors but not you. Those are the places worth earning, starting with the ones that recur most.
  6. 06Check the facts on every page that does mention you. Correct the wrong ones before you chase new ones.

Which mentions are worth earning, and how?

The ones a buyer would trust if they found them without an assistant. The table sets out six sources and the honest way to earn each.

Where mentions come from, and the honest route to each
SourceHow to earn it honestlyThe trap
Press and trade mediaGive a journalist a fact they can use: a number from your own records, a dated event, a client's permission to be named, plus your name and description in English and in ArabicAnything you pay for must be labelled as advertising
Directories and registriesClaim and complete your Google Business Profile and the listings your sector uses, with details identical to your siteDuplicates and old addresses
Customer reviewsAsk every customer after delivery, in the language they spoke to you, with a direct linkOffering money or discounts for a good review, or writing your own
Associations, chambers and accreditation listsJoin what you qualify for and check that the member page shows your correct nameShowing logos of memberships you don't hold
Partner and supplier pagesAsk for the partner or where-to-buy page, and supply an approved descriptionOld pages that still carry a previous address
Customers' own posts and case studiesOffer to draft a sentence a customer can approve and postPaying anyone to promote you without checking the Advertiser Permit

A mention doesn't need a hyperlink to inform a reader, but the prominence signal Google describes counts links, so ask for the link as well whenever a page names you. The glossary entry on AI citations explains what counts as a citation in an assistant's answer.

Two routes suit most businesses this week: link building in the UAE and getting Google reviews without breaking the rules. Original UAE data designed to be cited, and regional press placement, make up the digital PR module of our SEO service.

What should you never do to get mentioned?

Never buy a mention that pretends to be independent. These are the five shortcuts to refuse.

  • Buying or writing fake reviews. A fake review is a false statement about your business, and the UAE government portal lists up to two years in prison and a fine of up to AED 2 million for advertising misleading prices or false data on goods and services. Whether a particular review is caught is for a lawyer to say, and this isn't legal advice.
  • Paying for placement that isn't labelled. A sponsored article presented as editorial misleads the reader, and a paid section that exists to borrow a host's ranking strength can look like the pattern Google's site reputation policy describes.
  • Buying 'AI mention' packages from sellers who can't show the mechanism. Ask how the mention gets onto a page an assistant reads, and who owns that page.
  • Creating dozens of directory profiles for the sake of it. Each one is another place for old details to go stale.
  • Paying creators without checking the Advertiser Permit. The National reported in January 2026 that the permit is required for anyone posting promotional content on social media, whether paid or unpaid, and Gulf News reported it has been mandatory since 1 February 2026. Check the current position with the National Media Authority, and see the post on the advertiser permit.

The cheapest accurate mention is the one you haven't asked for yet. Ask your happiest customer tomorrow, in the language they speak to you in, for an honest review on the platform your buyers use.

Questions people ask

01Do reviews affect what ChatGPT says about my business?

Nobody outside the labs can say how much weight any assistant gives reviews. What's documented is that Google's local ranking draws on review counts and on links from other websites. Earn reviews honestly because buyers read them and Google counts them, but don't promise a ChatGPT effect.

02How do I find which websites AI assistants use to describe my business?

Ask your category and comparison questions on two or three assistants and copy every source they cite, with the date. Sort them into your own pages, profiles you control, independent pages that mention you and pages that don't. The independent pages that mention competitors but not you are your targets.

03Is paying for sponsored articles safe for AI visibility?

Not when it's unlabelled. Unlabelled paid placement misleads readers, and Google's site reputation policy targets third-party content hosted mainly to borrow a site's ranking strength, so it carries risk with no proven return. Clearly labelled advertising is legitimate as advertising, but don't count it as an independent mention.

04Do influencer posts count as brand mentions for AI search?

They create posts that mention you, but no source we checked shows how assistants weigh them. In the UAE, press reports say the Advertiser Permit is required for anyone posting promotional content on social media, paid or unpaid, so check the permit position with the National Media Authority before commissioning creators.
