Query fan-out
Definition
Query fan-out is the technique AI search systems use to split one question into several related sub-queries, search for each at once, and combine the results into a single answer. It is why one long question can draw on pages that never match its wording.
Google has used the term to describe how AI Mode works. A person asks one long question, the system breaks it into narrower searches across subtopics, and the answer is assembled from whatever pages best answer each part. The page that earns a citation may never have been the closest match for the question as it was typed.
For content, the implication is that a page can win on a sub-question. A service page that states the price basis, the timeline, what is excluded and where the service is offered gives the system more of the narrow answers it goes looking for than a page that only says the service exists. The sub-queries differ by engine and by run, so any list of them is an illustration and not a set of keywords to target.
Nothing documented ranks question-led pages above others for this kind of search, but the logic points that way. Your own sales calls, WhatsApp threads and support emails are a better source of sub-questions than a keyword tool.
Say a buyer asks an assistant which removal companies in Dubai will move a two-bedroom flat to Sharjah on a Friday and also pack it. The system might search separately for removal companies on that route, for packing services and for Friday availability, then merge what it finds. A page that states all three in plain sentences can be pulled in for any one of those searches, even though the buyer never typed its name.
