Lifecycle stage

Definition

A lifecycle stage is a defined position in the customer journey — such as subscriber, lead, qualified lead, opportunity, customer — used in a CRM to segment communication and measure conversion between stages.

The value is entirely in the definitions being agreed and enforced. When marketing and sales hold different views of what qualifies a lead, every downstream report becomes an argument rather than a measurement.

Stages should be few, mutually exclusive, and defined by observable criteria rather than judgement. A stage that requires someone's opinion to assign will be assigned inconsistently.
