Branding questions from UAE businesses
Answers on what a branding agency does, what branding costs, Arabic identity, brand strategy, rebranding and choosing an agency in the UAE.
What does a branding agency do?
A branding agency does three jobs in order. It decides your position: who you serve and why you, not the alternative. It designs the identity that expresses it: name, logo, typography, colour and voice. Then it writes the rules and builds the first materials so your team can carry on. If a project jumps straight to the logo, the first job was skipped.
How much does branding cost in Dubai?
Magnetic Keys' branding projects start from AED 45,000 excluding VAT, as a fixed fee staged against milestones. Scope moves the price: discovery work, bilingual naming and typography, the number of entities or sub-brands, and how much rollout is included. Be wary of a one-line quote. A logo, an identity system and a brand strategy are three different purchases, so get each priced.
How long does a branding project take?
It runs in three stages, strategy and position first, then identity, then rollout and handover, and approvals set the pace more than design does. We put a timeline against scope in writing before work starts. Ask any agency for dates per stage and for your own sign-off points, because projects stall when decisions wait on people who aren't in the room.
What's the difference between branding, brand strategy and marketing?
Brand strategy is the decision: who you serve, why you and not the alternative, and how you sound. Branding makes that decision visible and consistent through name, identity, voice and guidelines. Marketing is the work of reaching buyers with it. Skip the first two and you end up paying for ads that say what every competitor says.
What does a brand strategy look like in practice?
It's a one-page decision. Take a made-up bookkeeping firm in Business Bay: it serves free zone start-ups, it keeps their books ready for VAT returns, its proof is documented turnaround times, and it sounds plain and direct in English and Arabic. If a line of your strategy would fit a competitor's website unchanged, it isn't finished.
What are the main branding strategies?
There are four common set-ups: one master brand across everything you sell; separate brands for each product line; an endorsed brand, where a sub-brand carries the parent's name as a guarantee; and a personal brand, where a founder is the face. If your audiences and reputations overlap, use one brand. If they conflict, such as a premium service beside a budget one, split them.
Do I need a logo, or a full brand identity?
A logo is one mark. A brand identity is the system around it: colours, typography in English and Arabic, imagery style, voice and rules for use. Buy only a logo if you're testing an idea and expect to change it. Buy an identity when more than one person produces your materials, because without rules every department invents its own version and the brand drifts.
Should my brand be designed in Arabic as well as English?
Design them as a pair from the start. Arabic added afterwards shows: mismatched type weights, awkward alignment and a name nobody checked in Arabic. We design Arabic alongside English, with voice written natively: Modern Standard Arabic for formal and government audiences, Khaleeji for consumer ones. The UAE government portal names Arabic as the official language.
How do I choose a branding agency in Dubai?
Ask to see the thinking, not just the finish. Request a sample strategy page and a guideline with client details removed, ask who does the strategy and who does the Arabic, and ask what they would not change about your brand. Check that the fee is fixed and staged against milestones, and that you receive master files and the right to use everything.
What should brand guidelines include?
Enough for someone who has never met the designer to produce something on-brand: logo variants and clear space, colour and typography in English and Arabic, imagery and tone direction, voice principles with do and don't examples, and templates for what you make weekly. The test is use. A new hire should be able to apply it in their first week without asking anyone.
When should a business rebrand?
Rebrand when the name or the position is the problem: customers can't tell what you do, can't say or spell your name, or you've outgrown what it describes. If sales are down, leads go unanswered or the offer is stale, a rebrand won't fix it. Refresh the look alone when the logo fails on screens or signage and the name still works.
Can I rebrand without losing customers or Google rankings?
Yes, if you plan the handover. Keep the old name visible for a while with a line such as 'formerly X', tell customers and suppliers directly, and update every profile and listing on the same day. If the domain changes, map every old URL to its new equivalent with a permanent redirect before launch. The ranking risk sits in the redirects, not the logo.
Can I get branding done for less than AED 45,000?
Yes, with a smaller scope, and it's worth saying plainly: our projects start from AED 45,000 but a one-page positioning statement, a simple wordmark, two fonts and a colour palette can come from a good freelance designer for less. What you give up is strategy depth, Arabic typography, guidelines and rollout. Do the positioning first, because a logo can't fix an unclear offer.
What's the difference between a creative agency, a design agency and a branding agency?
A branding agency owns the position and the identity system. A design agency executes visuals you've already decided. A creative agency develops campaign ideas, and a production house shoots and edits them to a script. If you don't yet know what makes you different, start with branding. If you do and just need materials, a design agency is enough.
How is brand marketing different from performance marketing?
Brand marketing builds the memory that makes people choose you before they search. Performance marketing captures people who are ready to act and is judged on cost per lead. A business needs both, in sequence: if you can't say what makes you different in one sentence, fix the position before buying reach, and once ads pay back, spend more on being remembered.
How do I know if my branding is working?
Look for signals you can count: more people searching for your business by name, more direct visits, enquiries that arrive already knowing what you do, fewer price-only comparisons, and staff using one description of the company. Google Search Console shows searches containing your brand name. Set a baseline before the project, so you have something to compare after launch.
