First-party data
Definition
First-party data is information a business collects directly from its own customers and channels with consent — purchases, site behaviour, CRM records and subscriptions — as opposed to data bought from third parties.
As third-party cookies and cross-site identifiers disappear, first-party data becomes the foundation of both targeting and measurement. Businesses with clean, consented, well-structured customer data can still build effective audiences and feed platform automation properly; businesses without it increasingly cannot.
The practical work is unglamorous: consistent identifiers across systems, consent captured and stored correctly, a CRM that is actually maintained, and server-side plumbing that can activate the data. In the UAE this also means handling PDPL obligations properly rather than treating consent as a checkbox.
